Transcending Religion: Reflections on Spirituality and
Psychoanalytic Practice
Presenter: Gerald J. Gargiulo, Ph.D.
This talk will discuss what is known as negative theology (the attempt to
describe God or religious experience more from what we can’t say rather than
what we can) and how its assumptions dovetail with psychoanalytic findings.
Employing analogies from quantum mechanics, Dr. Gargiulo will discuss the
meaning function of mind as well as the role of mystery in interpreting
reality. In considering how these ideas are relevant to psychoanalytic theory
and practice, he will develop an understanding of the “I” as both an
imaginative and cultural construct. The function of such social experiences as
civility, compassion and empathy will be discussed. This evening’s talk is
based on a forthcoming article which is scheduled to appear in The Annual of
Psychoanalysis.
