Jun 8, 2003: Ashbach: "On War: A Psychoanalytic Meditation"

Back ] Up ] Next ]

PSPP 2003 Brunch Series Brochure with Registration Form (pdf file)

Presenter: Charles Ashbach, Ph.D.

This special brunch presentation will examine psychoanalytic approaches to explaining the dynamics of war and the war impulse. From Freud's first reflections in 1915, when his three sons served in the First World War, through his dialogue with Einstein, and on to his final thoughts on "civilization", we will consider his paradigm of the drives and the death instinct. We will also utilize the work of Franco Fornari and his object relations approach to explain the destruction, sacrifice, unreality and paranoia associated with the war phenomenon. We'll also consider the role of narcissism, shame and narcissistic rage, following Kohut, to continue the development of a paradigm that does justice to the complexity of the war dynamic, which Freud said, induces a "logical bedazzlement" in those who try to understand it. Included will be considerations on transformations in conscience, collective responsibility and the role of "external factors" in the emergence of the bellicose state of mind.

Please note: This is a nonpartisan approach that will be meaningful for all PSPP members regardless of their political views.

There will be ample time for discussion following Dr. Ashbach's presentation.

Objectives:

  • To familiarize participants with psychoanalytic thinking about war in the work of Freud, Fornari, Kohut and Bion
  • To understand the nature of the fantasies, splitting processes and conscious and unconscious anxieties that generate the impulse toward war and destruction
  • To provide support and structure for the participants ability to integrate the psychological meanings of current events and their ability to offer containment and empathy for their patients
