PSPP Sunday Brunch Series
Presenter: M. Elizabeth Stokes, Psy.D
Dr. Stokes is a clinical psychologist who practices in a variety of settings
including community mental health, health psychology, and private practice. She
studied music as an undergraduate at Harvard University and is currently
completing her training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music.
Objectives:
- To introduce the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) and
describe its development and uses.
- To explore ways in which spontaneous imaging (also known as Active
Imagination) in the therapy setting can provide access to and integration of
unconscious material.
- To learn how music – in particular specific classical music works –
can support and deepen the therapeutic experience.
Developed in the 1970’s by Helen Bonny, Ph.D., a music therapist and
explorer of consciousness, this method utilizes carefully selected classical
music programs to provide “soundscapes” for a client’s personal imagery
journeys. The music serves as both a trigger and support for emotions and
memories, and helps to illuminate and integrate unconscious material. The
therapist acts as a supportive guide to and witness of the client’s inner
world. Listening to music while in an altered state of consciousness can also
result in an encounter with beauty which in itself can be deeply healing. This
method can serve as an adjunctive therapy which complements and enhances ongoing
clinical or analytic work; it can also stand alone as a brief (6-12 sessions) or
a longer-term therapy.
