Apr 25, 2004: Walters: "Examining the Relationship Between Father-Daughter Attachment and a Daughter’s Object Relations"

PSPP Sunday Brunch Series

Presenter: Randolph W. Walters, Psy.D

Dr. Walters is an Associate Professor of Graduate Counseling at Eastern University.

Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of the importance of the quality of attachment in molding a daughter’s internal world and interactive experiences.
  • Develop an understanding of the relational dynamics of the father-daughter dyad.
  • Consider the implications of the results of the study for psychotherapy with women.
  • Explore some of the challenges involved in the clinical assessment of attachment and object relations.

In the last four decades, changing labor force patterns and associated social norms have led to a growing interest and scrutiny in fatherhood. The father-daughter dyad, first alluded to in Freud’s developmental theory, has received little specific attention in the psychoanalytic and research literature. Yet according to object relations theory, children develop attachments to their fathers during the first years of life. The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between father-daughter attachment and a daughter’s object relations. It hypothesized that the quality of the father-daughter attachment is positively associated with the strength of a daughter’s object relations. The results suggest a relationship between the quality of a daughter’s attachment to her father and the affective quality of her object representations. Implications of these results for psychotherapy with women and the clinical assessment of attachment and object relations are discussed.
