Mar 28, 2004: Wilson: "The Intoxicated Patient in Psychoanalytic Treatment"

Back ] Up ] Next ]

PSPP Sunday Brunch Series

Presenter: David Wilson, M.Ed.

David Wilson is a psychologist in private practice who works with adolescents, adults, and families.

Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participant will have:

  • Increased knowledge about the effects of patient substance abuse on the analytic relationship.
  • Increased competence in maintaining the frame with substance abusing patients.
  • Increased knowledge of psychoanalytically-relevant techniques to address patient substance abuse.

Psychoanalytic interest in alcoholism and drug abuse has extended from Freud and his inner circle to the present day. Both Freud and Jung were reported to have treated active addicts, and the two corresponded on Jung’s treatment of one. Many contemporary psychoanalysts accept patients who have, or have had, substance abuse problems into treatment, sometimes learning of these problems only after the patients are accepted. Although some substance-abusing patients may come to sessions intoxicated or demonstrating sequellae of intoxication, psychoanalytic literature on the treatment of substance abusing patients rarely, if ever, addresses this challenging situation. This presentation will explore theoretical and technical considerations involved in working with substance abusing and intoxicated patients. Recommended reading: Berthelsdorf, S. (1976).
