Feb 23, 2003: Brunch:Gay Male Parenting: A Challenge for Psychoanalysis?

Back ] Up ] Next ]

Presenter: Dennis Debiak, Psy.D.

Clinical psychologist in private practice in Swarthmore and Philadelphia; teaches and supervises at Widener University's Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, where he also directs a concentration in psychoanalysis.

Objectives .Become aware of the challenges that gay men face in forming and nurturing families. .Understand the applicability of psychoanalytic theory to developmental and relational issues faced by members of families headed by gay men. .Develop some basic skills necessary for doing clinical work with gay male parents and their children.

How do psychoanalytic concepts apply to non-traditional families? Using the documentary film "Daddy & Papa" as a basis for discussion, this paper will consider the relevance of psychoanalytic theory on gender identity, the family romance, and the "reproduction" of parenting for families headed by gay men. Whether existing psychoanalytic theory and practice is useful, or must be completely reworked in order to adequately address the developmental and relation-al issues faced by gay male parents and their children will be discussed.

"Daddy & Papa" will be shown in its entirety prior to the paper presentation and discussion. From the film's producers: "Daddy & Papa is a one hour documentary exploring the personal, cultural, and political impact of gay men who are making a decision that is at once traditional and revolutionary: to raise children themselves. Taking us inside four gay male families, Daddy & Papa traces the critical issues that inevitably intersect their private lives-the ambiguous place of interracial families in America, the wonder and precariousness of surrogacy and adoption, the complexities of marriage and divorce within the gay community, and the legality of their own parent-hood."
