Apr 10, 2005: Brunch: Psychotherapy with the Dying Patient

Back ] Up ] Next ]

Presenter: M. Jay Moses, Ph.D.

Dr. Moses is a psychologist in private practice with offices in Wayne and Center City. He received his doctorate from the University of Tennessee and completed his internship at Pennsylvania Hospital, where he has remained on staff for many years. He currently supervises psychology interns in their work at the hospital's cancer center.

Objectives:

  • To explore the relational dynamics of dying patients and their families.
  • To explore the dynamics of faith, hope, and grief in the dying process.
  • To explore alterations in traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy when working with dying patients.

Psychotherapy seems to take on a different meaning when we think of it in relation to a dying patient. Difficult questions arise: Do we remain focused on personal growth? Do patients grieve their own impending death? What is the meaning of "working through" in this context? When are defenses such as emotional denial adaptive and when are they disruptive and debilitative? Facilitating a meaningful encounter with a dying patient often involves opening up a new kind of space within oneself (as therapist) and within the treatment room. This space must be able to tolerate and sustain powerful feelings and intense relational experiences. Confronting fear, despair, and grief, while not feeling overwhelmed by emotion, is the task of both the patient and the therapist. Interpersonal faith, the connection to another which lends transcendent meaning to both life and death will be explored in the contexts of therapeutic and familial relationships.
